Homemade detergent, a little elbow grease and a lot of money saved!

So I've been making my own detergent for 8 months. that being said I've only made two batches. Can you buy one bottle of detergent that last four months? I don't think so lady! So you will need:

  • Container for detergent, I bought a steralite container that has a latch locking lid
  • Borax, you can get this at Walmart or even at the Dollar General.
  • Arm & Hammer washing soda, I REPEAT WASHING SODA NOT BAKING SODA!
  • 1 bar of laundry soap.(Fels Naptha, Zote, Dr.Bronner's)
  • Cheese grater( I have two in my home, one for cheese and one for soap)
  • Optional: Essential oils like lavender or vanilla if your prefer a scent to your laundry

So you want a well mixed and even mixture of the three ingredients.

Cute painted Laundry box, painting optional!

Shred the soap! I find that using the larger grate is easier, the soap tends to clump when I used the smaller shred. the pieces might seem big but the dry out and crumble into smaller pieces once well incorporated.

Once the soap is shredded, add one cup each of the washing soda and the borax, stir, add another cup of each, repeat once more. So that is a total of 3 cups washing soda and 3 cups borax.

Your final outcome should look something like this. And guess what? 2 tablespoons of this baby in your washer before you add the clothes and your clothes comes out just as clean as conventional detergent, without all those excessive harmful chemicals. Also if you do add the E.O just a few drops will do!
